Contemporary Maori Art

ContemporaryMaoriArt.com began in 1973 as the Pride art Gallery situated in downtown Lower Hutt, New Zealand. It started with a sell out exhibition of the work of painter Darcy Nicholas, who was to become one of Maoridom’s leading contemporary artists. The Pride art Gallery was sold in 1978 when Darcy painted full time eventually forming a small family company called Darcy N Holdings that specialised in collecting and marketing Contemporary Maori art.

In September 2009 Darcy N Holdings formed ContemporaryMaoriArt.com with the intention of bringing together a world class selection of leading contemporary Maori, New Zealand and International artists.

James Nicholas returned to New Zealand in August 2009 after four years living in Tokyo to become the Director of ContemporaryMaoriArt.com. James has a Diploma in Business Studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Information from Massey University in 2004. He has been working to establish key networks in Japan and intends to strengthen cultural relationships with other countries. Darcy Nicholas continues as a Director of the company. He is a leading Contemporary Maori painter, sculptor, writer, and commentator on Maori art and has been at the forefront of many major art events since the 1980’s. He has exhibited and travelled widely and has a comprehensive private collection of contemporary Maori art. He has worked closely with the Native American, Canadian First Nations, Aborigine of Australia, and the leading African sculptors of Zimbabwe.
