Darcy Nicholas

Darcy Nicholas is a both a painter and sculptor who is at the forefront of the contemporary Maori art movement and the promotion of Maori art globally.

“I call myself a contemporary Maori artist as my way of acknowledging my culture and the wonderful Maori people who raised and surround me today.  Art is my only freedom because it gives me time to think, to study, to question and debate all aspects of our culture, our future and our lives across ethnic differences.”

His extensive travels have brought him into contact with many cultures and he feels that cultures, including Maori, will need to consciously work at retaining their own individual identity.
