    I wanted to create a vision of eternity that reflected all time and space in one image. The spiral patterns reflected the solar systems and the black stars the energy sources that absorb life forms. As I created the image it took on the shape of a strange creature and beyond that shape were other shapes. I realize that to conceptualize eternity is probably beyond the abilities of the human mind.

Darcy Nicholas is a leading contemporary Maori painter, sculptor, writer, curator, events manager, and commentator on Maori issues. He has been actively involved in the contemporary Maori art movement since the late 1960’s.  He has exhibited throughout New Zealand, Australia, Africa, United States, France, India, Britain, Canada and has been part of several international touring exhibitions of Maori art.  His work is held in many private collections throughout the world as well as city galleries in New Zealand, the National gallery of Scotland, and the Volkerkrunde museum in Germany. 

In 1984 he won a Fulbright Cultural Award to observe African American and Native American art. He has travelled to the United States several times since then and has been responsible for several major cultural exchanges between Native American and Maori artists. This was formerly recognised in a citation by the American Ambassador to New Zealand in 2009.  

In 1997 he project-directed the design and building of the Pataka Museum in Porirua City, basing its design on ideas he had picked up in Africa, Japan, Britain and the United States. It won National and international recognition for its innovative design, events,  projects and exhibitions. 

In 2005 he won the Creative Wellington Award for his services towards the arts in the greater Wellington region, and in 2010 was awarded the Queens Service Order (QSO) for services to Museums.
